€2.9501962 Grand Seiko First “J14070” – Cal. 3180
The watch that started it all. Introduced in 1960 as the very first Grand Seiko, the reference J14070 laid the foundation for everything the brand stands for today: precision, understated elegance, and obsessive attention to detail. Powered by the hand-wound chronometer-grade Caliber 3180, this early Grand Seiko remains one of the most historically important Japanese watches ever produced.
This gold-capped example dates to 1962 based on the serial number 2110XXX and features the iconic sharp dauphine hands, faceted indexes, and classic lion caseback medallion collectors look for. The warm gold tones combined with the restrained silver dial give the watch an especially refined mid-century appearance that perfectly reflects early Grand Seiko design philosophy.
The First Grand Seiko was produced in relatively limited numbers and has become increasingly sought-after among collectors due to its historical significance and beautifully executed design language. A true cornerstone piece for any serious Japanese watch collection.
Technical background
The Caliber 3180 was developed by Suwa Seikosha as a high-precision manual movement built to chronometer standards. At the time, Seiko created its own in-house testing standards that exceeded contemporary Swiss chronometer requirements. The J14070 combines elegant proportions with excellent finishing and remarkable mechanical quality for the era, helping establish Grand Seiko as a serious competitor to the finest Swiss dress watches of the period.
